Cat Care Society Is Seeking Candidates for Executive Director

Executive Summary:

The Cat Care Society (CCS), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit animal rescue and adoption center in Jefferson County, Colorado, seeks an Executive Director to run its limited admission shelter and cats-only veterinary clinic.  CCS cares for homeless, abused and neglected cats and offers adoption, counseling, veterinary care and community outreach services for cat guardians. 

 The successful applicant will be a seasoned professional manager, experienced in the business and operational aspects of running an animal welfare and shelter organization, and committed to the highest standards of animal treatment and care. 

This position oversees the CCS organization – shelter, clinic, and all related administrative functions, including operations finance, IT, communications, marketing, human resources, volunteers and outreach; conveys the vision and direction of the CCS Board; leads and supports the staff and volunteers; interacts with the public; and works as an advocate for the health and welfare of cats in the Denver metro area.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Working with the Board of Directors, develops and carries out the organization’s strategic business plan – one that provides vision and identifies objectives for optimal success in achieving the CCS mission
  • Serves as the public face of CCS, promoting its programs and values in the community, and representing its interests with partnering organizations, donors and prospects, the shelter industry, and state and local regulatory bodies
  • Leads the management, staff and volunteers in performing CCS’s day-to-day work and fulfilling its mission; maintains the highest standards in job performance, animal care and customer service; monitors staff’s progress toward short-term and long-term goals
  • Acts as the lead fundraiser and salesperson for CCS:  oversees donor cultivation, fundraising events and all other development activities, with particular emphasis on major-gift and planned giving development; oversees participation in supported community campaigns such as Colorado Gives; works to achieve sustainable revenue streams and long-term financial growth (very high Board priority)
  • In collaboration with Shelter Manager, works to enhance the visibility of the CCS shelter, and to build shelter traffic and volume of adoptions
  • In collaboration with Head Veterinarian and clinic staff, oversees measures to realize the full potential of the clinic, as measured in volume, revenue and profitability
  • Working with the managers of each revenue and cost center, develops and approves annual budgets for the organization; monitors and analyzes periodic financial results; arranges and supports annual financial audit of CCS by outside accounting firm
  • Ensures compliance with laws at all levels of government (including PACFA and other regulations), adherence to professional member standards for shelter and clinic operations, and transparency in all dealings with the public
  • Reports regularly to the Board of Directors on all aspects of the organization; recommends major initiatives; implements all directives of the Board
  • Supervises the Shelter Manager, Clinic Manager (Head Veterinarian), Bookkeeper/Accounting Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, and senior marketing, communications and development officers; monitors human-resources practices and supports the professional development of staff

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.  Graduate degree(s) and/or industry certifications (CAWA, etc.) will be given special consideration.
  • Minimum 5 to 8 years’ experience in management positions of increasing responsibility; 3 to 5 years in the animal shelter industry.

Required Knowledge and Skill Sets

  • A genuine love of cats and passion for the Cat Care Society mission
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise others in a positive manner and maintain a collegial work environment; ability to keep the organization on an even keel in stressful conditions, and keep staff and volunteers focused on the mission
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, public speaking experience, and familiarity with traditional and social media
  • Thorough knowledge of the animal welfare and shelter industry and issues affecting the industry
  • Demonstrated knowledge of budgeting, financial statements, core principles of accounting and general business management
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Successful nonprofit fundraising experience and knowledge of best practices in fundraising and donor development; ability to bond with current and prospective donors and make a compelling case for financial support
  • Computer literacy, and familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe office products

Compensation

Salary Range:  $65,000 - $80,000 annually, subject to negotiation between candidate and the Board of Directors

Benefits as set forth in the CCS Employee Manual and/or negotiated with BOD

Incentive Bonuses may be awarded based on performance goals and metrics as determined by BOD
