You helped us heal Nova, then she returned the favor.

Nova - Lonely Hearts Club

Sometimes the cats heal us too…

When Nova arrived at Cat Care Society, she was quietly carrying a heavy burden.

At 11 years old, Nova should have been settling into a peaceful “retirement” chapter of life. Instead, she was facing painful bladder stones (cystolithiasis), chronic urinary issues, arthritis, and severe, uncomfortable constipation. She stopped eating and became dehydrated. Even something as simple as using the litter box caused distress.

Nova - snapshot of 10 months of treatment

Over the weeks that followed, Nova underwent extensive diagnostics, treatments, and daily monitoring. She received antibiotics for infection, fluids for dehydration, medications to ease pain and regulate digestion, and a specialized diet to support her urinary health. Like many senior cats, Nova needed dental surgery to remove two teeth which were causing painful torn gums as well as ongoing care for a respiratory infection.

There were setbacks. Days when she didn’t eat. Her constipation worsened, at times requiring intensive intervention, including enemas and ongoing medication to regulate her system. There were moments when Nova’s condition felt uncertain. Cases like Nova’s are complex and costly, but we don’t rush through them. At Cat Care Society, we take the time to thoroughly diagnose and treat our cats, even when the road to recovery is longer. With close monitoring, daily treatments, a specialized diet and compassionate care, she was able to transition into foster care where we began to see her personality shine. Behind the scenes, her care remained extensive. Her foster worked hand-in-hand with our medical team, tracking symptoms, adjusting doses, and ensuring Nova stayed comfortable. But slowly, Nova turned a corner. After nearly 10 months, Nova was medically cleared for adoption with a long-term care plan. Her needs were ongoing but manageable with the right home.

With a little more time, the right person found her. Nova joined a home with other senior pets and quickly made herself part of the family.

Not long after bringing Nova home, Ellen began providing hospice care for her father. During that time, Nova stayed close — offering steady, quiet companionship exactly when it was needed most.

This is the impact of your support. Because while we work to heal cats like Nova, they have a remarkable way of healing us right back.

Nova with her family

Caring for cats with complex medical needs goes far beyond routine shelter care. They require ongoing diagnostics, specialized diets, daily medications, follow-up exams, and dedicated foster homes willing to support a long and often uncertain recovery.

When cats like Nova are given the time and treatment they need, they go on to form deep bonds — and sometimes, to provide comfort in life’s hardest moments.

Every day, more cats like Nova arrive at Cat Care Society — older, in pain, and in need of extensive treatment and patience. And every day, future adopters walk through our doors looking for a cat who will bring connection, comfort, and meaning into their lives.

Your gift today helps ensure that cats like Nova and adopters like Ellen can receive the support they need tomorrow and beyond.

Be part of the next life-changing story and give today.

With gratitude,
EC Michaels, Executive Director
